Release 10.1A: OpenEdge Getting Started:
New and Revised Features
Installation
This section provides a summary of the new features for the Installation for Release 10.1A.
Note: Platform references throughout this section have been simplified for readability. Windows refers to Windows 2000, Windows XP Professional, Windows 2003, and Citrix Presentation Server. Similarly, UNIX refers to UNIX and Linux.New medium for OpenEdge distribution and installation
In Release 10.1A, Progress Software Corporation supports a new DVD-based option to distribute OpenEdge installation software. In addition to the existing CD-based option and the Electronic Software Download (ESD) option available from the Progress Download Center at http://www.progress.com/esd, users can obtain and perform the OpenEdge Release 10.1A installation from DVD. The DVD, like the CD, is distributed in the OpenEdge product box.
The single OpenEdge installation software DVD contains all supported Windows and UNIX platform images from which Release 10.1A products can be installed. To perform the installation from the DVD, users navigate to the platform directory that corresponds to the platform on which they will install OpenEdge; Windows users double-click the
setup.exewhile UNIX users enter the appropriate mount command for the specific platform. For the required serial number and product codes, users installing from the DVD must also reference their License Addendum for the Media ID number associated with their install platform. For more information, see:
License Update utility enhancement
Release 10.1A supports an enhancement to the existing License Update utility that streamlines the process of updating an existing product license. Users can now enter a different, but valid, serial number (and associated, new control numbers) to update an existing license file (
progress.cfg). In prior releases, the update process would not accept different serial numbers; users were required to uninstall an existing license and then install the newer product license. The new update process greatly simplifies the license update process. Users now can upgrade licenses without incurring downtime. For example, users who originally obtained a license through the product evaluation process or PSDN subscription renewal process will be able to enter their new, different product serial numbers through the installation process to automatically update the current license data in the
progress.cfg.This feature is available on all supported Windows and UNIX platforms.
For more information, see:
Shared network install utility (Netsetup) enhancement
Release 10.1A supports a change to the Netsetup installation to allow the use of Uniform Naming Conventions (UNC) pathnames.
The current mapped drive approach permits some level of flexibility in support of a shared network location; users can map and unmap drives to shared resources, as needed. However, using UNC-based format,
\\server name\shared-resource-pathname, the ease of defining and using UNC pathnames supports a much greater level of flexibility in shared resource assignment and access. Although two separate approaches, any precautions or prerequisites to using a mapped drive method apply to the use of the UNC pathnames method.Note that Progress Software Corporation does not support mixing the use of these methods. For example, if you use a mapped drive to initially install a shared network on a server machine, you must use a mapped drive on the associated client machine. Also, if you used the UNC pathnames method to install a shared network on a server machine, you must use the UNC pathnames on the associated client machine.

Enhancements to the OpenEdge silent (batch) installation
In Release 10.1A, Windows and UNIX platforms have incorporated various enhancements into their respective OpenEdge silent installation implementations. For example, in addition to the existing option to perform a Complete installation, users can now choose to perform a Custom OpenEdge installation.
Also, customers can embed the OpenEdge install into their application’s installation mechanism, invoking the OpenEdge Installation Utility silently. Windows users now must use the new
-psc_scommand; UNIX users performing this same task on their operating system continue to use the-bcommand. The silent option still allows the installation to occur in a noninteractive manner, using a response file that can be created manually or programmatically.Beginning with Release 10.1A, Progress Software Corporation recommends that users record their installation choices in a response file, modelling their responses after the sample response file template presented in the product documentation. In Windows, users employ the new record function,
-psc_rcommand, to initiate the record function. On UNIX, users employ the new record function, using the-rcommand. Other new functions, related to creating a response file for each type of operating system, are also documented in Release 10.1A.In Windows only, the OpenEdge installation program has been rewritten to better serve Application Partners who want an easier way to integrate the Installation Utility into their own applications. The former default response file,
setup.iss, has been renamed tooesetup.ini, but retains the.inifile format. Theoesetup.inifile supports the use of the template’s content and structure, allowing users to employ the template as defined or modify it to reflect their needs. Once theoesetup.inifile’s content is established, the file is used to submit the installation options using the silent mode. For Windows platforms, some additional advantages of the enhanced sample response file include:
- Minimizing or, in some cases, eliminating certain error conditions that frequently prevented a silent installation to occur. For example, the -12 error condition, Dialog box out of order, will no longer occur because the required file responses can now to be read in any order. In previous releases, the installation dialog-box sequence was presented in a predefined sequence and could only be read in this preset order.
- Greater portability support from one Windows system to another.
On UNIX, the batch installation option retains the existing, easily integrated default response file,
install.ini, which now also supports the use of the sample response file template. All platforms continue to support a silent log file, which makes the status details about the response file available. (At run time, the user’s application installer can programmatically query the log file for these details.)

Enhanced interactive installation process
In Release 10.1A, the online, interactive installation process has been redesigned to help users more easily and quickly perform a successful OpenEdge installation.
The following changes have been made to the Installation Utility to facilitate completing the installation process on all supported Windows and UNIX platforms:
- Removal of the Before You Start dialog box. (See the "Enhanced installation-related documentation deliverables" section for related information.)
- Addition of two Attention dialog box prompts that allow users to bypass making choices related to either WebSpeed and/or the Adapter for Sonic ESB, which are being installed as either components or subcomponents of other OpenEdge products. The display of dialog boxes related to these products, when users have not explicitly installed them, has previously confused users.
- Inclusion of a new Domain Name field, and the change of the SonicESB Container Installation Location field to read Sonic ESB Home Directory field, to provide support for SonicMQ and Sonic ESB containers that can be used with the OpenEdge Adapter for Sonic ESB.
- The display sequence of the installation dialog boxes has been changed to present dialog boxes in a more logical order.
- Inclusion of Help buttons on all installation dialog boxes that allow users access to detailed help topic information and procedures for each dialog box.
For more information, see:
Enhanced installation-related documentation deliverables
Several changes have been made to the documentation deliverables related to the installation process to help users to better prepare for and more easily perform the OpenEdge online installation.
Enhancements to the documentation deliverables include:
- New preinstallation checklists for Windows and UNIX platforms, designed to help users quickly plan for and make their install decisions before starting the Installation Utility. The completed checklist become a job aid that users can refer to when actually recording install choices during the process.
A hard-copy version of the high-level preinstallation checklist, appropriate to Windows or UNIX, is contained in the OpenEdge product box. The following list identifies all other locations from which users can obtain a more expanded preinstallation checklist for their platform:
- In the appropriate appendixes of OpenEdge Getting Started: Installation and Configuration .
- In the root directory of the OpenEdge Release 10.1A product CD or DVD. Open the file,
Windows_and_Citrix_Preinstall_Checklist.pdforUNIX_and_Linux_Preinstall_Checklist.pdf, in Adobe Reader.- From the Progress Documentation Web site: http://www.progress.com/products/documentation/index.ssp.
- On the Release 10.1A PDF and Samples CD.
- New procedural details required to complete the installation dialog boxes are accessible online for Windows and UNIX platforms. The following list identifies all locations from which users can view and/or obtain copies of the online help:
- Online during the installation process from each dialog box that appears while running the Installation Utility. In Windows platforms, users select the Help button on an installation dialog box to display the associated help topic. Users can also use the help system’s Table of Contents from which all help topics are accessible. On UNIX, help is accessible either by selecting a Help menu option or performing a control-key sequence on a dialog box.
- As a help file accessible from your installation media. For CD and DVD media, the
inst_hlp.chmfile (in Windows) and theinst_hlpfile (on UNIX) are available from the root directory. For product downloads, the appropriate help can be obtained from the Progress Download Center at http://www.progress.com/esd. (Valid username and password required.)- An updated, single guide, OpenEdge Getting Started: Installation and Configuration , that consolidates all updated Windows and UNIX platform information into one book.
